The initial Unit Under Test (UUT) for the Wild Server Project has successfully emerged from its first day in the wild. The HP DL 380 G4, named Ashley, is the inaugural test subject for the project, which aims to demonstrate how data center volume servers fare under completely uncontrolled environmental conditions.
Ashley went under test on the afternoon of November 23rd. The temperature over the evening fluctuated over 30 degrees F, from 70.4 to 38.6 degrees. The relative humidity ranged from 40.2% to 66.1%. Indications show the server still functional, executing its simulated load program that exercises CPU, RAM, and disk.
The Wild Server Project exposes data center volume servers to an uncontrolled outdoor environment in Atlanta, GA, protecting the servers only from direct rain/snow and intrusion by pests.
