My vocabulary is influenced by my studies of primitive religions,
ancient mysticism, lost knowledge, ancient cultures, and children’s
art.
Using simple glyphs, complex notions can be expressed in a very
direct, graphic, and most importantly, a primal way. This is possible
because of perceptual reactions to basic plastic elements that are
encoded in the primal aspect of humankind.
I use igneous rock and other Earth materials mixed into the paint.
The mixed-media material is an important dimension of the work because
of its spiritual alignment with the imagery itself. The surface of
the piece is constructed by troweling this granulated volcanic substance
while scratching and carving into the surface until the final image
comes to life. A painting of this type tends toward objectification,
like a petroglyph artifact extracted from some archeological site.
